AC Not Cooling? 5 Things to Check Before Calling for Repair in Ahmedabad

An Ahmedabad afternoon in May can sit above 44°C, and that is exactly when an air conditioner decides to blow air that is merely “less warm”. Before you book a technician, it is worth spending ten minutes on the checks below. A good share of “my AC is not cooling” complaints turn out to be a setting, a filter or a blocked outdoor unit — things you can fix yourself for free.

1. Check the mode, the temperature and the remote

It sounds obvious, but it catches people out every summer. Remotes get pressed in pockets and by children, and an AC left on Fan or Dry mode will run all day without cooling much.

• Set the temperature to around 24°C. Setting 16°C does not cool a room faster — the compressor runs at the same speed; it just runs longer.
• If the display does not respond, change the remote’s batteries before assuming the AC is at fault.

2. Clean the air filters

3. Look at the outdoor unit

The outdoor unit is where the heat from your room actually goes. If it cannot throw that heat away, the room will not cool — no matter what the indoor unit does. Go and look at it while the AC is running:

• Is the fan spinning? If the indoor unit is on but the outdoor fan is still, that points to a capacitor, fan motor or power fault — skip to the last section.
• Is anything blocking it? Stored boxes, plants, a cover left on from winter, or a unit jammed into a cramped duct all choke airflow. After Uttarayan, check for kite string (manja) wound around the fan or caught in the grille.
• Is it baking in direct sun? A west-facing outdoor unit on a terrace can struggle on a 45°C afternoon. A simple shade that does not block airflow helps.

4. Rule out power and voltage problems

Summer afternoons are when voltage dips are most likely, and an AC that is not getting steady power will trip, restart or cool weakly.

• Check the MCB for the AC circuit in your distribution board. If it has tripped once, reset it; if it trips again, stop and call an electrician rather than resetting it repeatedly.
• If you use a stabiliser, check that its output light is normal and that it is not cutting out.
• A dedicated socket matters. An AC sharing an extension board with other appliances is a common cause of trips and a genuine fire risk.

5. Consider the room itself

Sometimes the AC is fine and the room is simply asking too much of it. A 1-ton unit in a large living room with a west-facing glass wall, a kitchen door open and six people inside will struggle in May.

• Close doors and windows, and draw curtains on sun-facing glass.
• Check that the AC’s tonnage roughly matches the room — as a rule of thumb, around 1 ton per 100–120 sq ft in Ahmedabad’s heat, more for top-floor rooms.
• Give it 20–30 minutes from switch-on before judging: a room that has been heating all day has hot walls and furniture to cool first.

When it really is time to call a technician

If you have been through all five checks and the air is still not cold, these symptoms point to a fault that needs a trained hand:

• Ice on the copper pipes or indoor coil even with clean filters — often low refrigerant.
• Water dripping from the indoor unit — usually a blocked or misaligned drain pipe.
• Clicking, rattling or a burning smell. Switch it off and do not run it until it has been checked.
• The outdoor fan or compressor does not start — commonly a failed capacitor.
