7 Signs You Need an Electrician — and What It Costs in Ahmedabad

Most electrical problems at home announce themselves quietly long before they become dangerous: a light that flickers, a switch that is a little warm, a breaker that trips “only sometimes”. 1. The MCB keeps tripping
A miniature circuit breaker trips to protect the wiring. One trip after you ran the geyser, iron and microwave together is the MCB doing its job. Repeated trips — especially on one circuit, or with nothing heavy running — point to an overloaded circuit, a short, or moisture in a fitting. Resetting it again and again is not a fix.
2. Lights flicker or dim when something switches on
A brief dip when the AC compressor kicks in can be normal. Lights that flicker on their own, or a whole room that dims every time the fridge starts, suggest a loose connection or an undersized circuit. Loose connections heat up, and heat is what starts electrical fires.
3. Switchboards that are warm, discoloured or smell of burning
A switch or socket should never be warm to the touch. Brown or black marks around a socket, a melted plug top, or a faint burning-plastic smell near a board are all signs of a connection overheating. Switch that circuit off at the MCB and get it looked at soon.
4. Sparks when you plug something in
A tiny blue flash when inserting a plug under load can happen. Large sparks, a crackling sound, or sparks from a switch are not normal and usually mean worn contacts inside the socket. Replacing a socket is one of the cheapest jobs an electrician does — far cheaper than what it protects against.
5. Mild shocks from appliances or taps
A tingle from the washing machine body, the fridge door or a metal tap means current is leaking somewhere it should not, and that the earthing is not carrying it safely away. This is a safety issue, not a nuisance. Stop using the appliance and have the earthing and the appliance checked.
6. Buzzing or humming from switches and the board
Electricity should be silent. A buzz from a switch, a dimmer or the distribution board usually means a loose or arcing connection. If you can hear it, it is worth having opened up and tightened.
7. You are adding a heavy appliance to old wiring
Many Ahmedabad homes and older pols were wired for a few fans and tubelights. A new split AC, a geyser, an induction cooktop or an EV charger all draw heavy current and should have a properly rated, dedicated circuit with its own MCB — not an extension board. If your house is 20+ years old and you are adding load, have the wiring and the board assessed first.
When it is not your electrician’s job
If the whole building or street is dark, or the problem is at the meter or the service cable coming into your home, that belongs to the power distribution company (in most of Ahmedabad, Torrent Power), not a private electrician.
